Videos that chronicle the construction milestones of a large HO scale micro-layout featuring the trolleys of the old San Diego Electric Railway and buildings of San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter. Also featured are videos of the magnificent Southern California Traction Club's modular layout of which I'm a member. Details about the layouts and club can be found at my blog: dan-d-sparks.blogspot.com.

The View From The Office
Adding a KeepAlive DCC Decoder to a poor running, open-frame motor, streetcar model made all the difference. The decoder allowed the car to be operated with some realism.

Fireworks

Southern California Railway Museum 2013. Trying to navigate a PE freight motor over misaligned track and overhead (the track had been relocated but the overhead hadn't been yet). The brakeman on the ground had to guide the trolley wheel. But when the wheel left the wire, fireworks ensued. One thing the video didn't capture was the brilliant green color of the arcing.

H.O. scale Ken Kidder Birney completely rebuilt as San Diego Electric Railway #301complete with passengers. Headlights, taillights, destination signs, and route signs all light up. Contains a M1 dcc decoder. And finally a BullAnt mechanism from Hollywood Foundry. A little noisy, Hollywood Foundry now makes the drive with a belt drive, so they are a lot quieter now. Великолепно
RARE!!!
What music? I thought it was noise. Why the torture?
je trouve très bien very well
I grew up in South Shields, which was supposed to have one of the only two grand union intersections in the World, the other being in Melbourne. But I never saw it - by the time I was born, it had been replaced by a roundabout. Still loved watching those trolleybuses, though.
Lots of great information in your blog! I’ve admired this layout for years. I’m hoping to be able to scratch build some streetcars in 1/29 scale, and to power them with NWSL gearboxes and can motors assembled into a power truck.
That's a beautiful trolley and a wonderful tour of the layout. And for some reason, Mr. George Huckaby doesn't look too pleased, sternly standing there at the end of the video. I wonder why? 1:47 🤔
Thanks for the ride! 🚎
Outstanding work!
When they ripped out the trolley tracks, the USA went all to hell.
That would be a sick car
I'm still enjoying this video! 👍😉
A noisy little bugger isn't she?! No matter...I still love that cute trolley!!! 🥰
Any Suydam HO brass traction cars running on this layout?
The late William 'Bill' Clouser would have loved this... as would my husbands late father, also an overhead electric modeler.
I think this would be a great display in O scale, it would be 8x8’.
I own two Suydam brass HO PE #1624 Steeple Cab Locos. I sure hope they don't behave the way the real one in the video did when I build a layout with "live", overhead wire to run them on. ⚡😬⚡⚡ That's scary! 😨 0:10, 0:26.
Lovely 😊❤
Loved your channel hope to see more?!
More to come!
I cannot imagine the time you must have put in on the overhead wire alone. Absolutely spectacular layout!
Fabulous journey
SORRY GENERAL MOTORS ! PACIFIC ELECTRIC LIVES !
Nice work
Awesome Video
Wonderful ,,, i'm building a traction layout too ,,, got a lot to do ,, after seeing yours,,,,
That's really cool just like really standing on the street watching the trolleys in real life cool
Awesome video and love the music. Would you be able to shoot a video showing how you set that up?
I don't know if I'll do a video, but I documented it in detail at dan-d-sparks.blogspot.com
Missed your videos, I'm so glad to see you're still doin stuff!!
That makes two of us. 👍😉
Great modeling and great music
Beautiful layout great camera work. Made me feel I was in Southern California in the 1940s.
my club only does dcc not dc so I have bacman n scale ez track still working on scenery!!!!!
I rode them in the 40s way to fast slow down half that speed.
The video is nice but the background conversation was too loud and a distraction.
Awesome work
The only thing missing from this club is intense LED lighting...
This one looks like the one they used here in San Dimas Ca.
Near hit at 2:37.
Yeah, they can tap if they time it right. But nothing detrimental.
Terrific work!
WAY too fast......
Am I correct in assuming that the track is all wired solid? I.e no 2-rail wiring, with gaps, powered frogs, etc.
You are correct. When the layout was regular DC powered the overhead was positive and the track was negative. But now it is DCC which is AC.
Too fast. Couldn't take in scenery.
Great job!
Wow. Simply great. Thank you!
I enjoyed this video very much, 100% awesome engineering there on a model level, a true marvel.
Beautifully working overhead! That must have been a headache to install, but the result is rewarding. Thaks for sharing.
awesome video Dan, liked.
A very nice video. Thanx! Your effort is outstanding !
Hey man, you still alive?
That is a lot of work. Well done!!
I think the school bus on the layout is abit TOO modern for this era
microbusss great layout, but I also saw a VW Beetle in there, and a Corvette, both too modern for the era.
